“Haus der Demorkratie” in Frankfurt

"Where voices are heard"- Democracy stands for openness and accessibility. Expressing this in architecture was a priority for the design.
The House of Democracy nestles around the Paulskirche (St. Paul's Church) with a grand welcoming gesture toward Paulsplatz and draws visitors into a spacious, multi-story atrium that serves to provide a clear, open, and light-filled distribution to the individual uses.
Across exhibition levels, which are also connected underground to the exhibition in St. Paul's Church the lobby/foyer, with all its functions, leads via the workshop rooms and laboratories to the main hall and the library level. All rooms are arranged in a flowing manner and connected via the open staircases in the atrium. The roof terrace also offers an amphitheater for performances and discussions outdoors with views over the entire complex and St. Paul's Square.
The structure is a hybrid wood construction, with a flowing concrete base transitioning into a lighter wood structure.
The outdoor area mediates between the church and the House of Democracy and offers steps for seating and many different recreational areas.
The administration is housed in the Treasury building near by. This, too, is connected to the House of Democracy via an underground basement leading to the Paulskirche and the exhibition spaces.
The overall ensemble is linked to the Paulsplatz, and uses clear elements: seating steps, and benches as inlays on the square so that the visitors fill invited and encouraged to discover and visit the Haus of Demokratie.
